AWS Migration and the Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF): A Complete Guide

Migrating to the cloud is about more than just moving workloads—it’s about transforming the way your organization operates and innovates. AWS Migration, combined with the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF), provides the structure and tools you need to make this journey a success. A key part of this process is selecting the right migration strategy, often referred to as the 7 Rs of Migration.

What is AWS Migration?

AWS Migration involves moving applications, data, and infrastructure to the AWS cloud. The process typically includes assessment, planning, execution, and optimization. Tools like AWS Migration Hub, Server Migration Service, and Database Migration Service (DMS) help streamline and automate many of these steps.

People: Prepares teams for the shift through training and organizational change.

Security: Ensures robust protection of data, applications, and infrastructure.
Operations: Optimizes ongoing cloud management and processes.

The 7 Rs of Migration Strategies

When planning your migration, one size does not fit all. AWS outlines seven migration strategies, known as the 7 Rs:

Rehost ("Lift and Shift"): Move applications to AWS with minimal changes. This is often the fastest way to migrate workloads.
Replatform ("Lift, Tinker, and Shift"): Make small optimizations to take advantage of AWS features without significant application changes. For example, migrating to Amazon RDS instead of managing databases on EC2.
Repurchase: Replace legacy systems with new cloud-native solutions, such as moving to a SaaS application like Salesforce.
Refactor/Re-architect: Reimagine the application to fully leverage AWS capabilities. This is ideal for modernizing monolithic applications into microservices.
Retire: Identify applications or systems that are no longer needed and decommission them to save costs.
Retain ("Do Nothing for Now"): Keep certain systems on-premises if they are not ready for migration or don’t justify the move.
Relocate: Move applications directly to AWS without changes, such as relocating VMware workloads to VMware Cloud on AWS.
